Samsung to supply Three’s new network infrastructure

Electronics manufacturer wins first European network contract following deployment of its LTE solutions around the globe

Three has signed a deal with Samsung Electronics to develop the network’s LTE radio access network and 3G LTE core infrastructure in the UK.It is the first deal of this type Samsung has signed in Europe and means the manufacturer will supply and run LTE base stations, trialling the system later this year with full deployment targeted for 2013.

In recent years Samsung has partnered with firms in the US, Japan and Saudi Arabia on developing their LTE network infrastructures.
Samsung Electronics executive vice president for telecommunication systems Youngky Kim said: “This contract marks a significant milestone for Samsung and further demonstrates our commitment to the European market.

“Samsung has been active in developing and commercialising data-specialized mobile solutions since the early 2000s, and has accrued significant experience in LTE projects around the globe. We are bringing the full weight of this experience to our deployment with Three UK, and trust this will mark the start of many successful relationships with leading mobile operators based in Europe.”

Three UK CEO Dave Dyson added: “Three’s customers will start benefitting from this investment in our core network early next year and those benefits will grow further as we deploy new spectrum.”
